Spring in Alberta has a funny way of messing with you.
It leans in close, gives you a warm whisper of possibility… and just as you reach for it, it snaps back below freezing like winter is not quite done proving a point.
And I will be honest, I am not loving it.
Because this is the time of year when the body wakes up. The mind starts to clear. The call to get outside gets louder. And instead of flowing into it, you find yourself layering up like you are heading into a cold-weather campaign instead of a peaceful ride.
Still… today, I got a win.
Back in the Saddle
I finally got out on my hybrid road bike, my Kona Bownessia.
It is that perfect in-between machine. Not quite a road bike, not quite a mountain bike. Flat bars for control, enough speed to feel alive, and just enough grit to handle whatever path shows up.
And while this was my first ride on the Kona this season, it was not my first ride overall.
I have already been out on my mountain bike, my Haro A1, shaking off the rust and getting the legs moving again. Between the two bikes, it feels like stepping back into a familiar rhythm… one that has carried me over 2,000 km in a season before.
But here is the truth, no matter how many kilometres you have ridden…
The first ride always humbles you.
The legs remember slowly. The lungs open in stages. The mind takes a few minutes to settle. It is not about performance; it is about returning.
And today, I returned.
A Different Kind of Movement

I rode over to Renfrew Pool to meet Tina. She was there teaching Nia, doing what she does best, guiding people back into their bodies.
Nia is a movement practice that blends dance, martial arts, and mindfulness. It is not about pushing harder or grinding through reps. It is about moving in a way that feels good, natural, and expressive.
Where cycling, at least for me, can feel like discipline and rhythm… Nia feels like flow and freedom.
And yet, they meet in the same place.
Presence.
While I was outside, navigating the cold air and shifting gears, she was inside guiding people toward awareness and connection. Two different expressions, same destination.
The Only Thing That Matters
Was it cold? Yes.
Did spring fake me out again? Also yes.
But I got on the bike.
That is the only part that matters.
Not perfect conditions. Not the right temperature. Not waiting for some ideal moment that may or may not come.
Just action.
Because every ride I have ever taken, every kilometre I have ever logged, started the same way…
I got on the bike.
And maybe that is the lesson spring is trying to teach this year.
Life is not waiting for perfect conditions either.
It warms up. It cools down. It invites you forward, then tests if you really meant it.
The question is not whether the conditions are right.
The question is simple.
Will you ride anyway?
If something in you knows it is time to stop waiting… to stop negotiating… and to start stepping forward with intention, then this is your invitation.

This is not about sitting on the sidelines talking about life.
This is about getting in the game with other men who are done waiting for perfect conditions and ready to move.
Block the dates. Guard them. Decide now.
Because at some point, you stop preparing…
…and you ride.
