Some characters are invented.
Others become lifelong companions.
Master Akio has always been the latter.
When I first dreamed him sixteen years ago, I assumed he would simply become the wise mentor in a novel.
Instead, he became one of my greatest teachers.
People often ask me if Master Akio is based on someone I knew.
The truthful answer is…
Yes.
And no.
He carries pieces of many remarkable people I’ve been blessed to meet throughout my life.
Teachers.
Mentors.
Friends.
Martial artists.
Spiritual guides.
Even strangers whose wisdom lasted only a single conversation.
Over time, all those influences blended into one unforgettable man.
Master Akio doesn’t preach.
He rarely tells Graham exactly what to do.
Instead, he asks questions.
He tells stories.
He smiles.
Sometimes he laughs.
Sometimes he frustrates Graham so much you can almost hear readers yelling at the pages.
But that’s how real wisdom often works.
It invites rather than commands.
One of my favourite things about writing Master Akio is that he never stops learning himself.
Even after death, he continues to grow.
That may sound strange until you remember that every teacher leaves something behind.
A lesson.
A memory.
A way of seeing the world.
In many ways, that’s what A Warrior’s Heart has always been about.
The people who shape us never truly leave us.
Their voices continue to echo in our hearts long after they’re gone.
Perhaps that’s why Master Akio came back.
Perhaps there were still a few more questions worth asking.
And perhaps…
A few more smiles worth sharing.
Question for you…
If you’ve read the series…
What’s one lesson from Master Akio that has stayed with you?
I’d love to hear it.
Only three weeks until we return to Inspiration Island.
